City Museum in Zabrze
How do you tell the story of the sporting DNA of a city that has raised dozens of outstanding champions? The permanent exhibition “Zabrze – the Sporting Heart of Silesia” responds to the need for a modern museum space that presents sport as an integral part of the city's identity. Locating the exhibition on a floor of the main grandstand of the Arena Zabrze stadium gives the entire project a unique, remarkably authentic architectural and symbolic context.
Comprehensive design and official certifications
Our task went far beyond the exhibition itself. As part of the collaboration, we prepared a comprehensive building design and technical/detailed design for the conversion of the stadium's rooms, adapting them to house a modern exhibition and museum offices.
The space we designed meets the highest institutional standards. The design was positively verified for compliance with the rigorous guidelines of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage on creating museums, which was officially confirmed by a positive opinion from the National Institute for Museums (NIM).
We also delivered complete design and cost documentation for the permanent exhibition, covering exhibition structures, display cases, multimedia, graphics, and interactive elements. Everything was based on the principles of universal design, guaranteeing full accessibility and safety.
An engaging narrative and sporting legends
Since 2016, the Sports Department of the City Museum has assembled an impressive collection of objects donated by athletes, clubs, and residents. Working closely with the curatorial team, we translated these valuable artifacts into a coherent, engaging story. The exhibition is divided into modular thematic zones that guide visitors chronologically from local beginnings to international triumphs, maintaining a perfect balance between factual knowledge and emotion.
In the space we arranged, enriched with archival materials from Gliwice and Katowice, pride of place goes to:
– The legend of Górnik Zabrze: The story of the 14-time Polish champion and its thrilling battles in European cups. On display are, among other things, historical tickets, match programs, and jerseys.
– Champions' memorabilia: Unique objects donated personally by outstanding footballers such as Włodzimierz Lubański, Stanisław Oślizło, Jan Kowalski, and Marek Piotrowicz.
– The Ernest Pohl collection: A priceless collection of memorabilia made available by the family of one of the greatest players in the history of Polish football.
– The multi-sport pride of the city: A space celebrating the successes of other disciplines, with a strong emphasis on the achievements and Polish championship medals won by the handball players of Pogoń Zabrze.
The Sports Museum in Zabrze is much more than a collection of trophies. It is a thoughtful, narrative space that presents sport as a social and cultural phenomenon, allowing future generations to feel proud of their city's great traditions.
